Everything You Need To Know About Ceramides

What are ceramides? Ceramides are lipids (oils) found naturally in your skin. While they might be new on your skincare radar, they are essential to your skin’s function and health. Without ceramides, your skin can become dry, itchy, or irritated.

The simplest ceramide definition is to picture your skin as a brick wall: Skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides are the cement. This cement holds the bricks in place and keeps them strong like a shield. Skin cells and ceramides combine like bricks and cement to create a moisturized, supple, and protective skin barrier.

When ceramide levels are low, your skin barrier is weakened—think of it as cracks in the cement of your brick wall. Through those cracks, vital substances (i.e., water) can escape from your skin and external aggressors (i.e., allergens and pollutants) can enter your skin easier.

Fortunately, you can supplement your body’s natural ceramides by applying them directly to your skin. Using a moisturizer with ceramides every day helps restore your skin’s barrier and retain moisture, for skin that is once again plump and hydrated.

CeraVe helps replenish your skin’s existing ceramides with a unique combination of three essential ceramides—1, 3, and 6-II—that relieve dry skin by reducing water loss, increasing hydration, and restoring your skin barrier. CeraVe ceramides feature patented controlled-release MVE technology that locks moisture in to help skin feel its best.
