Frequently Asked Questions About
-
Can a foaming facial cleanser improve my skin barrier?
Yes, especially when using a foaming cleanser formulated with balancing, skin-soothing ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide, like CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser. When used regularly, it helps lock in moisture and maintain your skin’s natural protective barrier while gently removing dirt, makeup, and excess oil. Follow it up with a complimentary moisturizer for normal to oily skin, such as CeraVe Oil Control Moisturizing Gel-Cream, a lightweight, non-greasy hydrator with oil-absorbing technology that delivers all-day hydration. Or, if you prefer a moisturizer that also provides sun protection, try CeraVe Ultra-light Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30.
If you happen to be in need of a facial cleanser for dry skin, we’ve got you covered there, too. CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser with three essential ceramides, squalane oil, and hyaluronic acid, transforms from an oil into a soft foaming texture. Ideal for dry or very dry skin, yet gentle enough for sensitive, eczema-prone, and baby skin (3 months and up), this oil-to-foam cleanser also helps lock in moisture while helping to maintain skin’s protective barrier. For skin that’s very dry, top it off with our Intensive Moisturizing Cream.

How do I control oily skin with a cleanser?
First, be sure to look for a face wash or cleanser formulated specifically for your skin type. While there are benefits to having oily skin, such as a tendency to have fewer wrinkles than drier skin types, the American Academy of Dermatology (ADA) states that the key to oil control is striking an optimal balance between removing excess sebum (oil) and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, the ADA recommends some easy-to-follow tips—including using a foaming cleanser—to help control oily skin.
1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser up to two times a day.
2. Look for skincare products that are alcohol-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores.
3. Always remove your makeup before you sleep, either with a cleanser or cleansing makeup remover.
4. Apply moisturizer after washing your face with a foaming cleanser, including one with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, during the day.
5. Avoid touching your face throughout the day. (We know, this one can be tempting, but you can easily transfer dirt, excess oil, and bacteria from your fingertips to your face, especially if your hands are in need of a good wash too.) -
What is the best face wash for oily skin?
There’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin needs to be scrubbed with a strong face wash in order to get excess oil under control. However, that philosophy couldn’t be further from the truth; using a harsh cleanser can actually have the opposite effect, causing your skin to overcompensate and increase oil production. In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (ADA), those with oily skin should reach for gentle, non-drying cleansers up to two times a day, especially those that are free of oil and alcohol, and non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. And while it may seem counterintuitive to add moisture to skin that tends to be naturally slick, the ADA stresses the importance of moisturizing all skin—even oily skin types—to help maintain natural moisture balances. -
What causes oily skin, and how can I manage it?
If you struggle with oily skin, you may have found yourself wondering how to get it under control—and how it got that way to begin with. Well, the answer could be one factor, or a combination of a few. Oily skin can result from basic genetics, since it can run in families. Oil production in the skin can also change at different times in your life, like during puberty or young adulthood, as well as with fluctuations in certain hormone levels. Stress can also do a number on the overproduction of oil. The size of your oil-producing sebaceous glands may factor in, as they can be naturally larger or become enlarged due to previous blemishes, weight fluctuations, and certain skin conditions. The environment can also play a role: people who live in warmer, more humid climates tend to have oilier skin, while those in cooler, less humid climates are more likely to have drier skin.
1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser up to two times a day, and after sweating.
2. Avoid harsh cleansers and scrubbing your skin, as they will irritate your skin and lead to even more excess oil production.
3. Try using a soothing facial toner, like our BHA Exfoliating Acne Toner with three essential ceramides and 2% salicylic acid. This gentle formula helps unclog and reduce the look of pores, while visibly helping to smooth skin texture for a clearer-looking, more refined glow.
4. Use moisturizer and sunscreen, because skin compensates for dry and/or sun-damaged skin by producing more oil—the last thing you’d want when you’re trying to control oil production in the first place.
5. Stay hydrated from within as well by drinking plenty of water, which may help calm overreactive sebaceous glands.
6. Use products formulated without alcohol, oil, or other potentially overdrying or pore-clogging ingredients (a.k.a. non-comedogenic).
