Important Things to Know about Sunscreen Lotion

  • There are two main types of sunscreen products: mineral and chemical. Whereas chemical sunscreens are formulated with ingredients that help absorb UV rays, mineral sunscreens create a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. Mineral ingredients, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, effectively help reflect and scatter the sun’s rays. In addition, it’s also possible to find sunscreen products that feature a blend of both mineral and chemical sun protection.
  • Applying sunscreen daily is beneficial for all skin types at any age. When deciding on the best sunscreen lotion for your skin’s needs, look for products that are formulated for either your face or body, as well as products that are best-suited to your skin type. For example, sunscreens for oily skin should ideally be oil-free, lightweight, and non-comedogenic so they won’t clog pores or cause acne blemishes.
  • Sunscreen lotions, like most skincare products, include an expiration date on their label. The FDA requires all sunscreen products to have a shelf-life of at least three years.1 Always read the label closely to find out when your sunscreen lotion will expire. It’s best to keep your sunscreen products out of extreme heat or direct sunlight when spending time outdoors in order to preserve their efficacy.
  • When applying sunscreen lotion to your face, follow the instructions on the product label closely. Generally, the recommended usage is about ½ to 1 teaspoon for your face or the equivalent of a shot glass (about two tablespoons) when covering your entire face and body. Mineral sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure, and approximately every two hours when outdoors, or after swimming or sweating.1
